MATCH REVIEW 22ND SEPTEMBER!!

MATCH REVIEW 22ND SEPTEMBER!!

As usual, highs and lows, but I was pleasantly surprised by the night at least in terms of the wrestling if not the storyline, but that's how VPW rolls! It did feel finally that it was worth watching, though. So let's get started on the review.

1st Match: This should be bottom card w/ Yukako vs Mourn
For once Mourn actually wrestled! And did some interesting stuff! Incredible. It's almost like I fucking said: if she actually puts her mind to it, she can be a decent wrestler but most of the times, she doesn't and it's fucking irritating that she relies on shitty fallbacks/cheating/Torment rather than using her wrestling skills. I keep saying this over and over again but when she's never been fucking consistent about this!!! The match started well with some good spots even before the bell rang, with a DDT on the ramp, then it was brought to the squared circle where the referees got involved, but eventually ended up just being a brawl outside of the ring once again. They had planned some cruel looking spots and the finish was impressive to say the least (although this seemed to be a night of high-flying finishers for some reason).

The after-match was quite hilarious since it was clear that P46 going fucked up a lot of plan and instead of Mourn teaming up with P46, she's teamed up with Yukako in pretty much a repeat of the first 'shake my hand' spot that they had done before. Also it was clear the crowd fucking hated Mourn this time around, which was great, although they were cheering her on by the end?! Marks are gonna mark, I guess. Gonna give this match a 3 out of 5 for the  Mourn tax, anyone else could have been 4 or 5. Mourners crying that I'm biased FUCK OFF AND READ MY EXTENSIVE ESSAY ON MOURN ON MY ROV BLOG!!

2nd Match: We've saved grandpa AND Christmas!! w/ Fragata/Big Bird vs Roja/Vega$(??)
Reddit idiots claimed that either Vega$ was gonna wrestle or not and turns out that the idiots that said he was gonna wrestle were right, which is a wonder all by itself. Anyway, in this match they introduced Big Bird, which made me laugh out loud the first time I saw him. I guess they wanted the fuckup from the Royal Wrangle have another chance? No idea why. The match started with the so-called faces attacking first, with Fragata giving Vega$ some blows while inside the ring, Roja and Big Bird did their best impression of a road-runner cartoon, except with the theme reversed. Anyway, this was followed by a cartoonish spot where Big Bird threw Roja into Vega$ and Roja's goons, and then Fragata dived in himself once they were back up.

What followed was the most incredible segment I ever saw in a wrestling. By incredible I mean that I didn't fucking believe that they actually decided to run it. Basically Vega$ got quoted some contract law about being forced to be in the ring. These kind of spots are BORING AS FUCK and I still don't see why some promotions run it (although it was gonna get much worse later on). So finally Vega$ enters the ring and performs a chair shot (with the referee just chilling there? I can't remember, it was dumb anyway), before getting beat.

After this, it is finally revealed that Fragata's grandpa is finally safe, in the conclusion of a storyline that no one really gave a fuck about. At this point there's more beating on Vega$ and at least Big Bird seems to show that he learnt something, and then a big flying finish for the pin. On the one hand, finally Vega$ got beat. On the other hand, the storyline was dumb as fuck. So I guess 3 out of 5 for this one as well.

3rd Match: More endings than Return of the King w/ Shay vs Cortez
This was a decent match for Shay, which honestly coming from me, it's high praise. I honestly thought they were gonna give this to Shay in end (ooops spoilers!) but the ending was a bit of clusterfuck and honestly I don't understand why they bothered to do it this way, although I'm glad of the end result.

The start of the match was relatively mediocre wrestling from Shay, which is his fucking staple, but at least he managed to do some things and get an offensive going. Him trying to do a spear was a good spot, I must admit, showed at least a little bit of psychology of trying to use Cortez's finisher against him. Honestly a direct comparison of the first few matches that Shay was in for VPW (before I started watching, that is), does show that at least he's improved so maybe (and this is a big MAYBE) he's not as dumb as he looks. Jury still out though. Shay was also going for Cortez's arms, which was a callback to the semis, so I think overall the ring psychology wasn't great, but it was good. I liked the bits afterwards were Cortez couldn't use his offence against the nimble Shay. They seemed to have at least thought this through at least in terms of the wrestling aspects. I also liked when Shay was finally caught, the pain was coming thick and fast, although the escape from that lock was one of the single dumbest things I've ever say. You can't completely take the dumbass out of Shay, it seems. but at least I was rewarded with one of the most brutal beatdowns that I've ever seen Cortez deliver. Just had to rewind that over and over again once the stream was over cause seeing Shay being clotheslined again and again is music to my ears.

Cortez set up for his shitty spear finisher, and Shay dodged it. The sell from crunching against the turnbuckle was sold really by Cortez. Taking the advantage, Shay went for his finishers (apparently for the first time ever, lol, just goes to show), and then the dumbness begins.

D'Angelo, who apparently was underneath the ring, came out and gave a beating to both Shay and Cortez before trying to claim the victory. Legault comes out, there's another fucking exciting legalese spot (why two in a single night?! Is this what the marks want? Being quoted a fucking rulebook?) and then when it seemed D'Angelo was going to win in order to have Legault have a pawn with the championship, Legault turned into a Face and wanted the result the fans wanted?! I really didn't understand the point of the whole exchange, but the fight then continued and Cortez got the belt in the end. Which he honestly should have, although I don't know where they are going with this because Cortez is old as fuck and probably gonna retire soon. Anyway, the storyline was dumb as fuck as per usual, but at least we had some decent wrestling to make up for it. 4 out of 5 for this one. Honestly wish the semis match between Cortez and Fragata had been the final, this one was decent but nowhere near as good as the semi.

Still, honestly, looking forward to see how it goes on after VPW comes back from the break. They have some decent wrestlers and hopefully the dumb storylines are going to be curtailed in the future. Just put on more Fragata and Cortez level matches and they should be sorted!

  1. I like the concept of a face turn from Legault, evil wrestling authority is an overdone trope and they have Vega$ to get a similar vibe in. If he gets his contract extended, anyway, and I think he might not. Also the powerbomb was boss (no pun intended) so here's hoping for more of that.

Here's hoping they let Cortez do another Elite Crew, no-one's ever going to be as good as Goose, Pit, and Suicide, but he's always been good at those gang spots (and having someone take the weight of the old man can only be a positive).

    1. Honestly i'd rather not watch matches from the geriatrics brigade, but that's just me

  2. Hi Mark! Great review as always!

I think I mostly agree with your assessment here, especially about doubling down on the weird legal spots. Have you read the Aerolgate theory? There's an argument being made a lot of this stuff was repurposed from the earlier plans of Aerol trying to butt into the tournament and Legault trying to contain him (after that whole cage match thing) to fix the storyline after P46 departure. Would love to hear your opinions on that!

Also I've been wondering if you're watching these in person? Cause there was an interesting thing about the second match that didn't really come off all that clearly on the PPV - the ringside action in the first half of the match. Like, it's rather obvious Vega$ can't wrestle much - and being a valet, fair game - but that beatdown he gave to Fragata looked RAW when you were sitting there. It really made me wonder if they sat him down to perfect that one spot or just told Fragata to take one for the team for the sake of the show.

  3. Hi TheVPWSmark, this is Rosa (aka Mourn). I just found this blog! I must admit that I did read your previous RoV blog but kind of ignored it, since you seemed like a troll tbh, but I don't think you are. You don't seem to like me much, and you seem to claim that it's because I either cheat or just use EXTREME violence or don't just wrestle. I kind of get that, and it seems to me that you are the kind of fan that likes stuff like Puroresu/Strong Style etc, but I think there's quite a lot of space in the world of wrestling for all kind of performers, so I feel a bit put off that you wouldn't enjoy my style, but I think your enmity is more towards my fandom rather than anything else. Anyway, I like the reviews, they are VERY entertaining, so keep up the good work!

    1. Hi Rosa, if that really is you! Glad to see you here, Mark might be wording his opinions strongly, but it's a great blog and community he's fostering out here!

I know you probably can't say much about what's planned for season 2, but is there something in particular you're excited about? Will we get more outwardly supernatural stuff from you? I've always loved those more "campy" (sorry, not meaning it the wrong way, but in the "fun" way) matches, VPW seems to be more restrained on that. Also with Mr. Vega$ being extended, do you know who his next client will be? I have a running bet that it's D'Angelo!

Hope to see you this week on WrestleCircus!
